JEFFERSON COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE SPECIAL RESPONSE TEAM AND NEGOTIATOR PEACEFULLY END 20-HOUR CLEVELAND COUNTY STANDOFF: Jefferson County, Arkansas – April 30, 2012 – On Saturday, April 28th 2012 the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office Special Response Team (SRT) was activated following a mutual aid request from the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Department.
At 12:30 p.m. the standoff began with deputies from the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Department after authorities had traveled to 60 Pansy Road in Rison, Arkansas, the residence of a forty-two (42) year old white male (W/M) whose name is not being released at this time pending additional charges. The W/M had allegedly threatened deputies and his paramour, who authorities learned had allegedly left him, which prompted his actions. Authorities from the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office, Arkansas State Police and Arkansas Game & Fish Commission attempted to communicate with the W/M in an effort to get him to surrender but their efforts were unsuccessful. Authorities from the Arkansas State Police Criminal Investigation Division began negotiations with the W/M; however, communication with him was terminated after he discarded his cellular wireless phone.
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office SRT were activated at 6:20 p.m. and arrived on scene at approximately 7:30 p.m. and began their assessment of the situation. After several hours of little to no communication with the W/M, the SRT were preparing to toss canisters of tear gas inside the residence in an effort to force him out of his residence. However, a negotiator from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office was called and arrived a short time later. At approximately 8:11 a.m. on Sunday, April 29, 2012 Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office Negotiator, Captain Terry Peckham successfully convinced the W/M to surrender and ended the standoff after several hours of dialogue with him. The W/M was taken into custody without incident and transported by deputies.
