FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Public Statement from the Office of the Sheriff

LONGTIME JEFFERSON COUNTY DEPUTY SHERIFF PASSESS:  Jefferson County, Arkansas - March 9, 2024 - It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of retired Jefferson County Sheriff's Office Deputy Sheriff, Richard M. Knox III, at the age of 79. Richard's journey in law enforcement was marked by dedication, service, and a genuine commitment to his community.

Deputy Knox began his illustrious career with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office on July 6, 1999, joining as a Deputy Sheriff assigned to the Uniformed Patrol Division. Prior to his tenure with our office, Richard served admirably with the Pine Bluff Police Department (PBPD), where he initiated his law enforcement career on February 15, 1972. His service with the PBPD saw him rise to the rank of sergeant within the patrol division.

Before his esteemed service with both local law enforcement agencies, Richard demonstrated his commitment to duty in the United States Air Force as a Military Police Staff Sergeant. His exemplary service earned him the "Air Force Commendation Medal" and the "Good Conduct Medal" before his honorable discharge in 1972.

Richard was not only a decorated veteran but also a consummate professional in law enforcement. He accumulated thousands of hours of law enforcement training, culminating in his Senior Law Enforcement Training Certificate issued on July 11, 2000, by Arkansas' Commission on Law Enforcement Standards and Training (CLEST). He was certified as a firearms training instructor and field training officer, exemplifying his dedication to excellence in his field.

Richard's educational journey was equally impressive. He graduated from Pine Bluff High School in 1963 and went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff in May of 1980.

Beyond his professional achievements, Richard will be fondly remembered for his infectious smile, witty sense of humor, and his penchant for sharing stories with rhyming wit. He never met a stranger and had a deep passion for the welfare of animals.

As we mourn the loss of Deputy Knox, we extend our deepest condolences to the Knox Family. His legacy of service and kindness will forever be cherished by those who had the privilege of knowing him.

Memorial services to honor Richard M. Knox III have been scheduled for 10:30 a.m. at Ralph Robinson & Son, located at 807 S. Cherry Street, Pine Bluff, AR.
